Classroom Projects

These projects are designed to instruct the unit of Graphic Design for the Introduction to Multimedia course. This is a blended survey course about the different aspects of multimedia. These topics include basic computer knowledge, understanding the Internet, graphic design, audio production, video production, and web design. These projects will take two weeks to complete and will include both synchronous and asynchronous activities. The social media activities are used to replicate the collaborative and critique environment of the graphic design industry.

Target Audience

The target audiences are 10th and 11th grade students who are enrolled in an Introduction to Multimedia course. These students have taken a basic computer course and have been in this course for four weeks.

Creating Posters Assignment
Planning/Explanation/Critique

Case Study:
ICHS Productions needs two posters designed to promote careers in Interactive Media. One poster will be designed to market ICHS Productions to encourage students to join the class. The second poster will be designed to market ICHS Productions to parents. Both posters must include information about Interactive Media, schooling needed for these careers, and graphics. Action Items:

  • Research careers in Interactive Media.
  • Create two posters (students and parents) using Glogster http://edu.glogster.com.
  • After creating your Glogter post, share with your classmates and create an explanation of your choices of elements in your poster.
  • Critique at least two of your fellow classmates designs.

Logo Design Assignment

Summary

Students will work in teams of four to introduce color into a logo design. Working in teams, the students will review the content in the Graphic Design unit on the class Blackboard site, and then they will select the best colors that will help to create a brand for their client.  The client bios and teams where preselected by the teacher.

Action Items:

  • Review your thumbnails.
  • Attend a chat session with your team and debate the use of color.
  • Each member will select one logo.
  • Add color using InDesign or Pages.
  • Export your logo as a PDF.
  • Explain your logo design and color choice in a paragraph. What does it say about your company?
  • Submit in Blackboard.

Test Review Activity 

Reviewing/Prediction

Summary

Students will work in teams of four to develop test questions for the unit “Introduction to Greaphic Dsign.” Working in teams, the students will review the content and then they will create 3 multiple-choice, 3 facts, and 3 definition questions using StudyMate. StudyMate allows the team to create and edit every question. After the team’s questions are created, the whole class will use the StudyMate games for review.

Action Items:

  • Review content.
  • Use StudyMate to create the review questions.
  • Each member will review and edit our teammates’ questions using StudyMate.
  • Students will use StudyMate to play the review games together or individually.

Weekly Threaded Discussion 

Threaded discussions are used throughout the course. Each week the students answer a prompt question about that week’s content by Wednesdy. Students then respond to at least two other fellow classmates by the following Monday.
